What I do

I work as a professional photographer, focussing on aerospace, heavylift and heavy logicistics as well as factories and industry. I capture the fascination of technical machinery and the humans around it in well-crafted, beautiful images that take the viewer right there into the story. In addition, I create movies, partially from still pictures but also from filmed sequences. I research subjects and write essays, articles and marketing copy, especially on complex technical or scientific topics. And I help with briging those media online and onto paper. Details are here.

Why hire me?

I understand my craft and I am creative with composition. I am also reliable and stick to agreements. I communicate transparently, ensuring a smooth collaboration between me and my customers. I have extensive experience with working in sensitive or dangerous environments. This includes both on-site conduct and the associated image approval processes.

This page is full of it. Check out the galleries for airplanes, cranes, heavy transport, people, technical equipment and construction. There are also photo reports on airplanes, cranes, heavy transport, companies as well as on certain industry sectors such as wind energy, the grid and traffic infrastructure.

Example Writing

Most of the recent magazin articles and press releases that I wrote are in German; I have a list here. However, I wrote several books and lots of papers in my other life as a software engineer. I also wrote a think book on selected topics from science and engineering called Once You Start Asking.

About Me

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in technology and engineering. I recall visiting railway stations, airports, open-pit mines, and the Deutsches Museum as a child with my parents. I attended a technical high school and subsequently studied Technical Physics. Professionally, I moved into software engineering and earned a PhD in Computer Science in 2014. I have been working as a freelance consultant since 1999. See here for my software bio.

Through my work as a software consultant, I drifted somewhat away from hands-on technical systems, although I was still involved in projects in technical environments from time to time. As a kind of “counterbalance,” I co-founded the omega tau podcast, where we interviewed scientists and engineers. Over nearly 400 episodes, I have been able to learn about many technical systems and, in some cases, experience them firsthand. Highlights included flying in an F-16, participating in two missions with SOFIA, and spending a week aboard HMS Enterprise.

Although the podcast was purely audio, I always did a bit of photography on the side using my phone. In 2019, I decided to take photography seriously. I bought a Sony A7 III and a Sony 24–105 f/4 lens and began taking my first “serious” photos. Since then, I have continuously improved both my skills and my equipment. After ending the podcast in 2023, I started photography as a business in 2024.

As this website shows, my work focuses primarily on technical equipment and the people who work with it. Aviation holds a special place for me, as it has always been close to my heart; I have been flying airplanes mysellf since the age of 14. Construction sites, cranes, heavy transports, and cars are another very rewarding subject, and factories of all kinds are great fun as well. I find it particularly appealing to portray the people working in these fields in a compelling way. And finally: I love dogs, which is why I am always happy to have them in front of my camera.
